And so it begins...
The first round of the Pentathanerd saw some head-scratching as the Trivial Quiz started off the competitions. Jon Rex earned the top spot with John Shimek close behind. The standings so far:
1. Jon Rexeisen - 340
2. John Shimek - 240
3. Konr Ness - 190
4. Justin Hendrickson - 0 (-220, rounded up)
The category for the Snow Sculpture contest is: CLASSIC ARCADE.
The Competition
New this Pentathanerd: individual competition! Teams of three are still encouraged, but everyone will be able to compete for placement as individual overall champions also.
Sign up early - some events this time may have limitations on the number of allowed participants. The early nerd gets the worm... as it were.
The Events
- Trivial Quiz
- Biathalon
- LEGO Luge
- Snow Sculpture / Snowflake Contest
- Hardware Teardown/Rebuild
- Trivial Quiz Championship Round
Trivial Quiz
The first event, the online Trivial Quiz, will feature 30 questions of obscure and random pieces of knowledge in such categories as Internet Memes, Science!, and (Nerdy) Pop Culture. The top three performers will compete for additional points in the Championship Round.
Biathalon
Run and shoot! Get out your Nerf® guns and practice up. Fire your one and only dart at the targets, then run and pick it up to keep shooting. Fastest time wins.
LEGO Luge
Design a wicked fast racecar - without wheels. Fastest sleds will earn big points, but there are points for style, too.
Snow Sculpture / Snowflake Contest
Creativity to the max - show off your nerd reference power by making a sculpture (or snowflake in the event of a no-snow-out) that best reflects the event's chosen theme.
Hardware Teardown/Rebuild
Tear it down, build it up, and fast as possible. How quickly can you render that bothersome mouse into tiny separate components before putting it all back together? Fast enough to qualify for the Championship round to do it again... with a working PC? (Individual competitors only)
Obstacle Course Relay Event
This event has been cancelled. The Trivial Quiz Championship Round will be held in its place.
The pinnacle of the competition, the Obstacle Course Relay Event is for teams of three. Make sure you know someone who can: set up a chess board; solve a rubik's cube, and; answer a trivia question... with scrabble tiles. And quickly!
Early Controversy
Jan 2, 2010
An unnamed construction firm, represented by the lawfirm Milkem & Billet, is initiating litigation against the International Pentathanerd Committee (IPC) over the awarding of the LEGO Luge construction contract to a company closely linked to one of the IPC board members. The lawsuit alleges that the No-Bid process used by the IPC excluded fair competition and is in direct contravention to the IPC Bylaws stipulating a bidding process for all construction projects.
Members of the IPC board were not available for comment, but have released a statement that they are confident this issue will be resolved in a fair and speedy manner.
